Carbenicillin is chemically compareable to Ampicillin. It is active against gram-negative Bakteria. Carbenicillin is very good soluble in water (highly hygroscopic) and highly instable against acids. Even in crystalline form it will undergo decarboxylation after prolonged storage. Solutions in water are stable only for hours, even at +4°C solutions are only stable for up to 5 days. Stock solutions are produced as 50 mg/mL solutions, sterile filtered an stored at -20°C. Common working concentrations are at 20 to 100 µg/mL.
