Recombinant Human IL-6 produced in E.Coli is a single, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain of 184 amino acids and a molecular mass of 21,000 Dalton. The ED50 as determined by the dose-dependant stimulation of the proliferation of TF-1 cells was found to be < 0.15ng/mL, corresponding to a Specific Activity of 6x10(6) IU/mg. IL-6 is a cytokine with a wide variety of biological functions: it plays an essential role in the final differentiation of b-cells into ig-secreting cells, it induces myeloma and plasmacytoma growth, it induces nerve cells differentiation, in hepatocytes it induces acute phase reactants.
