Cethylmethylammoniumbromid, a non-ionic detergent is used, e.g. for PAGE electrophoresis for determing the molweight of proteins that show an unusual behaviour (highly charged proteins or membrane proteins). Another important area of use is the precipitation of high molecular DNA, especially from plant material (genomic DNA). CTAB forms unsoluble complexes with nucleic acids (including RNA), when the concentration of NaCl is below 0.5 M. Phenolic plant components are not precipitated, thus offering an easy procedure to get pure DNA. Nucleic acids can be removed from the Nucleic acid-CTAB complex by high salt conditions. CTAB will be removed from the DNA pellet by subsequent washing with 80% ethanol.
