Micrococcal nuclease exhibits exo- as well as endo-5'-phosphodiesterase activity and catalyses the cleavage of DNA and RNA to yield 3'-nucleotides. The enzyme catalyses preferentially the hydrolysis of RNA and DNA at sites rich in adenylate, uridylate, deoxyadenylate or thymidylate. The enzyme has a molecular weight of 16,807 Da and is calcium dependent. pH optimum is 9.2 varying depending on the concentration of calcium ions. |
