AZT is a widely used antiviral agent. AZT penetrates cell membranes and by being converted into AZT triphosphate inhibits the reaction of the reverse transcriptase. AZT may be used to inhibit reverse transcriptase in vitro and for the investigation of polymerase-substrate interactions.
