Glycerol is used as supplement for media, buffers and reagents. It stabilises proteins and cells in the freezing and thawing process. The UIPAC name is: Propane-1,2,3-triol. Another synonym is 1,2,3-Trihydroxypropane. At room temperature Glycerine is a colour and odourless, viscose and hygroscopic liquid that tastes sweet. The viscosity and the taste have been the reason for the giving the name, which derives from the greek glykýs = sweet and the latin cera = wax. Glycerol can be synthesised petrochemically or isolated from plants. |
