RNA thermometers provide a degree in virulence!

A special regulatory strategy of genome translation in RNA viruses and bacterias is mediated via RNA thermometers. RNA thermometers (RNATs) are secondary structures in RNA sequences that are essential for the virulence of the organism. However the base pairing in the RNA thermometers can be altered due to various factors like the thermal denaturation. This means, once the optimal temperature is found (usually host body temperature), the virulent genes are exposed for the ribosomes to bind and the translation to start.  This virulence of an organism depends on stability of the RNA thermometer. This stability may also be governed by Point mutations in these RNA thermometers which may facilitate or hinder the propagation of the organism. There are claims of two different strains of COVID-19 being present, the S-type being more virulent than the L-type. The S and L types have been defined by just two tightly linked SNPs at positions 8,782 (orf1ab: T8517C, synonymous) and 28,144 (ORF8: C251T, S84L). The authenticity of these claims have been yet verified, however identifying these RNA thermometers and such Point mutations in more detail may allow researchers to find a cure for currently existing diseases.
