3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)-dimethylammonio]-2-hydroxy-1-propanesulphonate (CHAPSO) is a zwitterionic detergent and is used as a non-denaturing buffering agent.
CHAPSO has similar properties to CHAPS, but possesses an additional hydroxyl group (-OH), making it more polar and more soluble.
CHAPSO is frequently used for the solubilisation of membrane proteins.
