The gargle method is more widely accepted as only one rinsing solution needs to be gargled to generate a sample. Throat swabs, on the other hand, are perceived as unpleasant depending on previous experience and sensitivity, and in some people they trigger gag reflexes. Nasal swabs are experienced as even more uncomfortable and sometimes very painful, which is why they are usually not done with children.

Study results suggest that gargle tests - performed correctly - are as reliable as the smears.
