1,10-Phenanthroline complexes several metal ions (e. g. Fe and Ni) and is applied as an inhibitor of metalloprotases (e. g. Carboxypeptidase G2 from Pseudomonas; Peptidase T and Acetylornithinase from E. coli; Aminopeptidases from Apis mellifera; Peptidase V from L. delbrueckii etc.). It is included in protease inhibitor cocktails at concentrations ranging from 1μg/mL to 200μg/mL (corresponding to 1mM) or even up to 2mg/mL (10mM).
1,10-Phenanthroline is hardly soluble in water (0.3%) but can be easily dissolved in DMSO, EtOH, Aceton.
