Diethylene glycol is a colourless liquid which is mostly used in manufacturing other chemicals. It is denser than water. It can be formed as a side reaction during ester interchange of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, it can also be formed when terephthalic acid undergoes direct esterification with ethylene glycol.
Synonym: 2,2′-Oxydiethanol, 2-Hydroxyethyl ether, Bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ether, Diglyco.
