Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is used for such diverse purposes as viral / phage enrichment, plant protoplast fusion, or fractionated protein precipitation. In addition, the ligation efficiency can be increased by macromolecular crowding, that is, a concentration of molecules in solution. The stock solution used was a 40% PEG 6000 solution.
